SciEngiMathePloration
The name might sound weird at first. Yet, at closer inspection,
you’ll see that SciEngiMathePloration means simply: Science,
Engineering, Math Exploration.
ESD’s new award-winning cable television show is designed
to introduce kids to the world of math, science and engineering
in a fun and creative way. Since its inception about a year ago,
the show has covered such interesting topics as Architectural Engineering,
Robotics, Forensic Science, Human Science, Recycling, and more.
The show is co-hosted by ESD Member Gary Mach and
Shirisha Thota of Power Middle School in Farmington Hills. Take

Poster Contest:
In Celebration of National Transportation Week (NTW), May 11-17,
2008, students will have the opportunity to learn about the importance
of transportation by participating in the NTW National Poster Contest.
The contest was designed to encourage students to think about
the influence of transportation on their lives. Its aim is
to educate and inspire kids – the future movers and shakers
of the transportation industry. The contest is open to all
5th grade students nationwide. The Engineering Society of
Detroit (ESD) is the National Administrator of the NTW Poster Contest. To
participate in the program or for more information contact Sue
Ruffner at 248-353-0735, ext. 4117.

Robofest 2008:
Robofest is an annual autonomous robotics competition focusing
on learning STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) for
students in grades 5-12. It is sponsored by Lawrence Technological
University.
Robofest challenges teams to design, build, and program robots
to compete in the following categories in Junior and Senior age
divisions:
- Game Competition - A team of students competes
to accomplish robotics missions emulating real world environments
through the cooperation of two autonomous
robots.
- Exhibition - Since a game competition with
fixed rules may limit students' creativity, Robofest offers a
stage for exhibitions to show off their creations. Each team
has complete freedom to show off any autonomous robotics project
they have created.
- Robot Sumo
- RoboFashion Show
- Pentathlon and
- Vision Based Robot Mini Urban Challenge – This
is also for College teams
Started at Lawrence Tech in 2000, Robofest has grown multiple
venues in the United States and several other countries. For more
information about the competition, visit www.robofest.net
