A resource for builders: Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) is an objective and fair process used by owners to select architects, engineers and land surveyors based on the design professionals' qualifications in relation to the project.
 

Congratulations to the team from St. John Lutheran School in Rochester, MI, on winning the 2006 ESD Michigan Regional Future City Competition two years in a row and on taking Third Place in the National Competition in Washington, DC! St. John also won special awards at the national competition for Best Integrated City and Most Innovative Design/Construction Approach to Achieving Environmental Sustainability. ESD received four Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE) Diamond Awards: best E-Newsletter (ESD E-News), Web Site (www.esd.org), Membership Development (ESD Job Fair), and Non-Dues Revenue (ESD FE/PE Review Courses). We also took home Honorable Mentions for both Magazine Publishing (Technology Century) and Meetings & Expositions (ESD Michigan Regional Future City Competition). Thank you to our volunteers for all of their hard work and support!

The Greater Detroit Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) has launched their new Web site. ESD designed, maintains and hosts the site. ESD also provides broadcast e-mail services to ASSE. If your Affiliate Society is interested in ESD's Web and email services, please contact us.
 

ESD extends its condolences and its support to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We have donated diapers and baby formula to the relief effort. Here are other ways our Members are helping: donating to the Red Cross or the NAACP Disaster Relief Fund; offering shelter at Hurricane Housing or Katrina Housing; working with FEMA to provide support.
 

ESD is a winner of the 2005 Cool Places to Work Competition. The competition was created by Crain's Detroit Business, the Grand Rapids Business Journal, the American Society of Employers and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth. Read the Press Release.

Congratulations to Edward P. Czapor on receiving the 34th Gold Award, the highest honor of ESD's Affiliate Council. Mr. Czapor was nominated by the American Polish Engineering Association. ESD welcomes over 750 new members! Over 750 engineering students joined ESD and attended ESD's Entry Level Job Fair & Workshop on February 15 at the Southfield Town Center.

St. John placed 6th at the National Future City Competition and won special awards for Best Essay and Best Transportation.

Jim Padilla has been elected President and a director of the Board of Ford Motor Company, effective February 1, 2005. Mr. Padilla joined ESD in 1978 and two years later, in 1980, was honored as ESD's Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year (read the article in PDF format).

 

Ann Fletcher, FESD, received The Officer's Cross for Meritorious Service to the Republic of Poland. In addition to being the first woman honored as an ESD Fellow, Mrs. Fletcher was the first woman appointed to the ESD Board of Directors and the first woman to hold the position of Chair of the ESD Affiliate Council. ESD's prestigious Ann O. Fletcher Distinguished Service Award was established in her honor. She joined ESD in 1954.
 

ESD received two Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE) 2004 Diamond Awards and one Honorable Mention. The awards were for the Michigan Future City Competition, the da Vinci Awards and for ESD News.
