Honoring Michigan’s BEST Engineers & Scientists: 39th Annual Gold Award Banquet

Dr. Stephen J. Kirk Wins 2010 Gold Award

He has traveled the world and applied his expertise to projects as far away as China and the Middle East and as near as the North Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport.

The Affiliate Council of the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) is proud to bestow this year’s prestigious Gold Award to Dr. Stephen J. Kirk, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, an executive education instructor at Harvard School of Architecture and Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the founder of Kirk and Associates, LLC, a consulting firm based in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.

This award is given once a year to an engineer, technical professional or scientist, who has reached the pinnacle of his/her career and has contributed to the betterment of his industry and society at large.

Dr. Kirk has done all of the above and more. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a Fellow of SAVE International, a Certified Value Specialist, and a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional, Dr. Kirk’s illustrious career includes serving as vice president and manager of the Facilities Economics Group, aka the Smith Group, and applying his more than 30-years experience of value based design technique to corporate offices, hotels, resorts, shopping centers, museums, performing arts centers, educational buildings, US Embassies worldwide, airports, and more worldwide. He has conducted seminars and project studies in Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, the Middle East, Europe and the USA.

From 2004 to 2008 Dr. Kirk and his firm worked with General Motors Worldwide Facilities Group to develop global master plans for sites in China, Australia, Korea, Germany and South America.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Dr. Kirk has served on the board of the Miles Value Foundation as vice president since 2004. He has published nine books and countless papers and technical presentations on the subjects of Value Engineering and Life Cycle Costing.

Dr. Kirk earned a double major degree in Architecture/Urban Planning and Architecture/Economics from the University of Kansas, and a doctorate degree in architecture from the University of Michigan.

On Thursday, February 18, 2010, Dr. Kirk will accept his Gold Award. He will be joined by a cadre of 30 other engineers and scientists of all ages and backgrounds including students, all of whom have made amazing strides in their professions.

Please join us on Thursday, February 18 in honoring Dr. Kirk’s achievements and applauding the accomplishments of the other award winners.

The event will also feature the Order of the Engineer Ceremony. The Order was initiated in the United States in 1970 to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. Any engineer who has graduated from an ABET-accredited engineering program or holds a PE license is eligible.
