101st APBA Gold Cup Boat Race:
Feel the Power on the River

Friday, July 10, 2009
9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Sinbad’s Restaurant, Detroit

Summer in Detroit is not the same without the excitement of the APBA Gold Cup Boat Race. ESD is proud to be part of this tradition again this year and you’re invited to join us.

Don’t miss a spectacular breakfast at Sinbad’s Restaurant while listening to race drivers talk about what it’s like to operate powerful boats, ranging from 39 to 44 feet in length and powered by automotive or turbine engines up to 3,700 horsepower.

Following the breakfast, you will receive free pit passes to tour the race pit and vintage boat areas as competitors prepare to qualify for the 2009 Gold Cup Race on the Detroit River.

For more information, contact Fran Mahoney at 248-353-0735 ext. 116, or fmahoney@esd.org.

The Offshore Pro-Series is a consortium of professional powerboat racers who compete on an annual schedule of offshore races sanctioned by nationally recognized powerboat racing organizations. The Series is designed to provide racers of “Cat” class canopied offshore race boats with an annual Tour of quality race sites that offer high profile sponsorship exposure. Emphasizing safety, professionalism, and good sportsmanship, the Pro-Series promotes a friendly, competitive and fair racing environment for participating teams.

Based on the class or division, these offshore "Cats" range in lengths from 35 to 50 feet, and are powered by twin engine power plants, each having from 525 HP to over 3000HP, depending on the configuration. Two of the most popular configurations in the Series are the normally aspirated Cat Lite and Super Cat classes powered by twin 525HP and twin 750HP engines respectively.

With emphasis on safety, professionalism and competitive racing, the Offshore Pro-Series provides fans of offshore racing with nationwide up close racing action on 5 to 10 mile stadium style courses at various inland and ocean front locations.
