Economics of Green Building
March 17, 2005, 7am - 12:30pm
General Motors Corp. Centerpoint Campus North, Pontiac, Michigan
What are the real costs of a “green building?”
Why would a building owner want to spend money on “green design
and construction?” At this event, learn about the costs incurred
and benefits realized by organizations that commit to building a
structure that meets the USGBC’s LEED standards. The Michigan
Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council will explain LEED requirements,
and speakers from across the country will present case studies of
specific projects. Don’t miss this excellent opportunity to
find out what it takes to be “green.”
Speakers include representatives from General Motors Corp., Michigan;
SmithGroup, Inc., Washington DC; Swinerton Builders, California;
Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., California; Turner Construction Co.,
California and Michigan; US Green Building Council, Detroit Regional
Chapter; and Walbridge Aldinger, Michigan. Check ESD's website for
a complete agenda.

Emerging
Technologies in Solid Waste Management

Conference Training Day: March
30, 2005
Main Conference: March 31, 2005
Learn
how emerging technologies and regulatory changes are affecting the
solid waste industry at the Emerging Technologies in Solid Waste
Management conference on March 31, 2005. The Engineering Society
of Detroit (ESD) with the Michigan Waste Industries Association
(MWIA) and The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)
presents this one-day conference that will showcase bioreactor technology
and issues at the forefront of solid waste operations.
An exciting addition to the conference this
year will be a pre-conference training day. All training
day programs will be eligible for Continuing Education Credits.
The training tracks consist of 8-hour sessions with breakfast and
lunch provided. Topics will include:
- Establishing an Electronics Recycling Program
- Landfill Gas 201
- Geosynthetics in Waste Containment Applications
Building on the success of previous conferences,
there will be an all-day vendor booth and reception area. This is
an excellent forum for manufacturers and vendors to interact and
explore some of the latest achievements in the solid waste and environmental
industries. The conference day will end with an interactive panel
discussion on the redevelopment of the Ford Motor Company Allen
Park Clay Mine leading into a final networking reception.

Rebuidling New York City
May 19, 2005
On
July 4, 2004, New York City officials laid the cornerstone for the
“Freedom Tower,” a 1,776-foot office-building spire
and “Reflecting Absence” memorial that will feature
an underground museum of artifacts from the Sept. 11 attacks as
well as a cultural center. The World Trade Center Transportation
Hub of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be designed
to include a permanent PATH terminal and will provide pedestrian
connections to link ferry and subway lines across the downtown area.
Marsh USA, Inc. has been working with the demolition, environmental
and engineering teams since 9-11, providing risk management consulting
for insurance solutions. They will discuss their involvement in
all phases of the rebuilding process. Join us to support these efforts
and see first hand the steps that are being taken to revitalize
lower Manhattan.

ESD was founded in 1895, as a multidisciplinary society
uniting engineers, scientists, architects and professionals in related
technical fields. The mission of ESD is to enhance professional
development, foster growth and development of engineers and technical
professionals of the future and improve the communities where members
work and live.

at 248-353-0735, ext 4120, or e-mail mdwyer@esd.org.

Professional Development:
Education
ESD is aware that the world has changed. Business
life and the need for continuing education are not easy to balance,
and this can make a profound impact on your professional, as well
as personal, life. To address this change the Society is re-focusing
its educational programming and presenting it in time-sensitive
formats, such as seminars, workshops, lectures, tours, single-day
conferences and networking and mentoring events.
These programs offer everything from skills-based
training to cutting-edge technological developments. In addition,
each fall and winter ESD helps prepare those about to take the Professional
Engineer state licensure and certification tests with comprehensive
courses geared toward specific specialties. Contact Ron Smith, Education
Manager, at rsmith@esd.org for
more information.
Professional Development:
Leadership
ESD’s event committees provide an excellent
platform for you to learn and develop good leadership skills. These
committees also provide you the opportunity to work and network
with experienced professionals.
Make a difference in a young person’s life
by getting involved with ESD’s community outreach initiatives.
