Introduction to Sustainable Construction

September 9 and 10, 2009
ESD Headquarters, Southfield

Construction professionals with knowledge of sustainable development and green building are increasingly in demand. Get up to speed with this exciting new course that will introduce you to the principles and practices you need to know.

Taught by two highly respected college professors, the course will cover several topics including:

  • History and background of the movement towards sustainable construction
  • Working lexicon of terms and the “language” of sustainability
  • Principles and Practices of Total Quality Management (TQM) & its importance to the movement
  • Principles and Practices of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and its value to the construction community
  • Ethical obligations we face in a global construction and development environment
  • Impact of green/sustainable building practices on the traditional construction/design business
  • Challenges of introducing and implementing sustainable construction practices
  • Professional certification process for those who would like to become LEED-Accredited Professionals through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)
  • The process and benefits of achieving ASHRAE certifications—HFDP, HBDP, CPMP & OPMP—and using the knowledge gained to design better HVAC&R systems to improve the sustainability of the built environment.

This is a 300/400 level course and CEU and PDU credits will be available for course completion.
