Historically the Saginaw Valley ASM Chapter membership was dominated by Dow, GM, and Delphi employees working on metals for the automotive industry. We knew a lot about cast iron, magnesium, steel, and heat treating. Over the past decade we have seen a shift in our membership with more members working as consultants, teachers, and for small businesses. Although metals and heat treating remain primary areas of interest, we also have members working in plastics and solar materials. This shift in materials reflects the Great Lakes Bay region's efforts to diversify our economy. We hope to support those efforts and the new needs of our members with relevant programming and continuing education.
A number of our active members have transferred from Saginaw and Flint to the Pontiac area over the past ten years. Relocations and retirements of key volunteers have created openings in the Chapter leadership. We welcome your ideas and help, and will be glad to define a volunteer role that fits your schedule and interests.
Another big change in our Chapter is a happier one -- we welcomed alumni from 10 years of ASM Teachers Camps at University of Michigan, Michigan Tech, and more than 25 other Camp locations into our Chapter. Teachers who complete the weeklong workshop receive a free one year membership to ASM. We're eager to hear what we can do to help Teachers Camp alumni implement what you learned in your classroom, and hope to see you at an ASM event. Your curiosity and dedication are inspiring.
